Appleby Blue almshouse report for United St Saviour’s Charity

Appleby Blue Almshouse is one of the most innovative and inclusive social housing projects for old people living in London. We worked with Alison Benzimra, head of research and influence at the United St Saviour’s Charity, to co-design and produce an inclusive report that shares the impact, insights and innovations that have been achieved in the first year.

The report included initial copy-editing, illustrations and design so that the charity, the Appleby blue team, residents and partners could share in the success of this new almshouse and promote the model of high quality and inclusive housing for older people to politicians, developers and the wider public.

“They look great and were perfect for our high profile event which we hosted today”

–Alison Benzimra, Head of Research and Influence

Successful almshouse projects not only improve the health and happiness of residents but also create a ripple effect throughout the local community that frees up new homes for other needs and deepens intergenerational connections and resilience across the area.

The report concludes with eight recommendations that emphasise the critical importance and urgency of people-centred approaches to ageing. These recommendations affirm the right of all older people to a high quality of life, integrating housing, health and social care. They demonstrate that design excellence not only yields better outcomes but also reshapes our understanding of an ageing society, transforming it from one focused on rising costs and limited resources to a vision of shared responsibility, social cohesion, resilience and deeply human connections.

If you’re interested in transforming the impact of your organisation through design, we’d love to hear from you.
