Strictly Engineering

Design and communication workshop with the British Science Association

The British Science Association has started a new public engagement project with engineers called Strictly Engineering.

The project challenges engineers from a variety of disciplines, from both academia and industry, to design a poster that will engage visitors to the British Science Festival with their work.

Engineers receive training and mentoring from professional graphic designers and science communicators about engineering’s impact on society, communication and design.

This year DesignScience’s Anne Odling-Smee was invited on board as the design partner of the project to help train and mentor the engineers.

The posters were displayed at the 2012 British Science Festival where they were visited by a wide range of Festival-goers. The engineers had to impress both the visiting public and a panel of judges with their use of graphic design and spoken communication.

The posters can be viewed in a catalogue produced by the British Science Association. The winner of Strictly Engineering 2012 was Isobel Houghton from the University of Bristol for her poster “Can you send a secret?”.
